Job Description

Sales Engineer – Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings (PEMB)
Fulltime
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX OR Houston, TX

We have an immediate and exciting new job opening for a Sales Engineer (PEMB) to join our growing client’s team and work on-site at any of their offices located in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas or Houston, Texas areas.  We are looking for a driven and technically proficient Sales Engineer to serve as the critical bridge between our sales and estimating teams. This role is uniquely designed for an individual who combines the commercial instincts of a senior-level salesperson with the deep technical knowledge of an experienced PEMB estimator. The Sales Engineer is responsible for ensuring that every project opportunity is fully qualified, properly scoped, and accurately packaged before it reaches the Estimating team — directly improving throughput, estimate quality, and win rates.

This role owns the front-end of the project lifecycle: from initial client engagement and opportunity qualification, through scope development, drawing review, and the standardized handoff of complete, well-organized project packages to Estimating. The Sales Engineer will serve as both a technical advisor to clients and a quality gatekeeper for the Estimating department, ensuring the team never works from incomplete or ambiguous information.
production.

Responsibilities
Sales-to-Estimating Process Ownership
  • Own and execute the standardized Sales-to-Estimating handoff process end-to-end, ensuring every project submitted to Estimating is complete, organized, and ready to price.
  • Enter all project information into the Estimating Log, including due date, customer/contractor name, project name, location, and type of work.
  • Create and organize the project folder in the designated file structure, uploading all bid documents including architectural drawings, structural drawings, specifications, addenda, site plans, and any supplemental materials.
  • Initiate and manage Bluebeam Studio Sessions for each project, ensuring bid documents are uploaded and accessible to the Estimating team for collaborative review and takeoff.
  • Complete the Estimating Request Form for every project — capturing project name, customer/contractor, bid date, location, scope of work, and any special customer requirements — and upload it to the Bluebeam Session prior to handoff.
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for information quality on all submitted projects; reduce estimating rework caused by missing or incomplete documentation.

Technical Sales and Client Engagement
  • Lead client-facing conversations around project scope, building systems, technical requirements, and value-engineering opportunities from initial inquiry through proposal delivery.
  • Review architectural, structural, and civil drawings with clients and design teams to define scope, identify constructability considerations, and confirm project requirements prior to estimating.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site walks, and RFP reviews, representing our technical capabilities and ensuring all scope details are captured before the estimating process begins.
  • Identify value-engineering opportunities during scope development that can improve project competitiveness without compromising quality or schedule.
  • Support proposal delivery, scope clarification responses, and bid presentations, working alongside Estimating to ensure proposals are technically accurate and commercially compelling.

Cross-Departmental Coordination
  • Act as the primary liaison between the Sales and Estimating teams, communicating project priorities, timeline constraints, and scope expectations clearly and proactively.
  • Collaborate with engineering and drafting during scope development to confirm feasibility and identify design or detailing requirements that affect pricing.
  • Support project handoff meetings upon award, ensuring a seamless transition from estimating to project management with all scope documentation properly transferred.
  • Track bid results, win/loss outcomes, and client feedback, sharing learnings with Sales and Estimating to continuously improve bid strategy and accuracy.

Qualifications
  • 5-10 years of experience in PEMB estimating, structural steel, or metal building systems, with demonstrated senior-level competency in cost estimating and project scoping.
  • Proven experience in a client-facing or sales engineering capacity is strongly preferred.
  • Track record of successfully managing multiple concurrent bids and client relationships in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Deep understanding of PEMB systems and manufacturers including Butler, Nucor, Varco Pruden, Metallic, and similar.
  • Proficiency in Metal Building Software (MBS) for building modeling, configuration, and pricing output.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu, including Studio Sessions for collaborative document management and digital takeoff.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, structural drawings, civil plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Working knowledge of erection sequencing, steel fabrication processes, and general construction workflows.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the full Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity with ASCE hazard tools, wind/seismic load requirements, and building code fundamentals as they apply to PEMB design.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil or Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of technical education and field experience will be considered.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Submittal Completeness Rate — Percentage of projects submitted to Estimating with all required documents and the completed Estimating Request Form on first submission.
  • Estimating Lead Time — Average time from project receipt to Estimating team engagement, measured against department targets.
  • Rework Rate — Frequency with which Estimating must return projects to Sales/SE due to missing or insufficient information.
  • Bid Accuracy Support — Contribution to maintaining department-wide bid accuracy within ±3% of actual cost through thorough scope capture.
  • Win Rate — Competitive win rate on projects managed through the Sales Engineer workflow.
  • Client Satisfaction — Feedback from clients and GCs on responsiveness, technical competence, and proposal quality.
